CHAPTER NINE

TWO DAYS LATER, Adam knocked once then entered Sylvie’s kitchen and flicked on the light switch before depositing his armload of groceries on the counter. The house was silent and peaceful, and the tense muscles in his shoulders relaxed. Sylvie had been serious about getting cooking lessons. When he’d stopped by the café earlier that afternoon, she’d made him promise to show her how to cook scallops tonight. And no, he hadn’t gone to the café to see her. He’d come up with a legitimate reason; he’d been looking for Dusty to discuss when he was going lobster fishing. Getting to see Sylvie was a bonus. Besides, he’d done pretty good this week—he’d managed to stay away from her two whole days.

Dusty had promised to take him lobster fishing, and Adam figured getting up at four in the morning and freezing your ass off for the better part of the day while you hauled traps was a rite of passage. Practically everyone in the village had helped out on the lobster boats at some point of their lives. He couldn’t wait to be inducted.

He grabbed his clean jeans and sweater and headed for the shower. He managed to banish the erotic pictures in his head, triggered by the smell of Sylvie’s shampoo, by trying to gauge just how pissed off she would be this evening when she discovered they were having dinner guests. Or if she’d even care that they wouldn’t be alone.

He’d made sure he mentioned to Dusty he was cooking scallops in Pernod at Sylvie’s tonight, and Dusty immediately said he was coming to dinner. When Teressa heard what was on the menu, and that Dusty had already invited himself, she called her mother to ask if she would babysit the children for the evening.

The cooking lesson had turned into an impromptu dinner party, which was exactly what he’d been aiming for.

He didn’t trust himself to be alone with Sylvie. Ever since that kiss two days ago all he could think about was kissing her again. And other things. He turned off the water and toweled off hard enough to strip away a layer of skin. He pulled on his clothes, and ran his fingers through his wet hair to comb it.

He wanted Sylvie, but he couldn’t have her. Hell, he’d known that the first day he saw her. He’d even tried out different ways in his head how to tell her just how much of a loser he really was. Do you want cream in your coffee? And, oh, by the way, I have no idea how many people my father killed. And there’s a good chance I inherited the killer gene.

He grabbed his work clothes and stuffed them into his gym bag. He’d been dragging his dirty laundry around with him, doing it in the city when he was there, but soon he’d be ready to hook up the washer and dryer in his own house.

He grinned. His house was going to be a home soon.
